The start of a new year always brings with it the spirit of renewal and fresh beginnings. This is a great time to give your family home a breath of fresh air by updating your living spaces. The best thing is, you don’t need to splash out on a full-blown overhaul! You can easily reinvigorate your home and use fresh flowers to enhance your interior design, without breaking the bank.
Floral displays don’t need to be complicated or professionally arranged. You would be surprised how easy it is to transform your home with beautiful flower arrangements (with a little expert know-how!). Here are a few of our key tips for creating beautiful flower displays.
Quick tips for creating beautiful flower displays
Compliment your interior design with flowers
Your flower arrangements should tie in with your home decor, not compete with it. There is no need for large, ornate vases of flowers if your home styling is chic and simple. Sometimes even the most simple flower arrangements can make a huge difference. If your home styling is modern and understated, opt for elegant flowers like this classic orchid table display by The Block’s Andy and Whitney:

Also, remember that flowers shouldn’t be only for your kitchen table or entrance way. Use posies in complimenting hues on bookshelfs, in your bathroom and other nooks around the home for a touch of colour. We love how Dean and Shay from The Block incorporated small bright flowers into their decor:

Work with your colour scheme
Fresh flowers are a fantastic way to inject colour into your home, but they must tie in with your existing colour scheme. If you have a lot of bright furnishings, choose one key colour for your flowers. Alternatively if f your home has a very minimal colour palette, a bright burst of florals can add warmth and energy.

All white is always alright
When in doubt, you can never go wrong with an all-white floral arrangement! Fresh, clean and relaxing, white flowers are always on trend, and can be set off with an array of glossy greenery.

The first rule of choosing flowers for your home is to keep it simple! We know it can be tempting to grab armfuls of pretty flowers! By sticking to one or two key colours and marrying them with an array of greenery and filler-flowers, you will make sure the hero blooms get the attention they deserve.
When using flowers in your interior it’s important to include plenty of green foliage which highlights the natural, organic beauty of your flower display. You can use anything green and glossy from your garden to separate your flowers, add texture and emphasise the colour of your blooms. For a slightly different twist, try using green herbs such as mint or parsley.

Get creative with your display vases
There’s no need to invest in expensive vases to display flowers in your home. Experiment with other items like teapots, interesting bottles or mason jars. Old soup cans make fantastic flower vases. You can paint them to tie in with your colour scheme, or leave them as-is for a rustic look.

Keep them fresh
Once you’ve decided on the floral arrangements to match your interior design, the last thing you want to end up with are dead or wilted flowers after a few short days! Make the most of your blooms by making sure they stay alive and fresh for as long as possible, by using these tips:
- Strip any leaves or foliage from the stems below the water line. These can create bacteria in the water and kill your flowers.
- Always change the water every two days and re-cut the stems on an angle. You can use florist’s foam to keep flowers in place and hydrated so they last longer.
- Soak the foam in water for 15 minutes before cutting it to fit the container, and re-water it every couple of days.
Nothing softens and brightens a room quite like fresh flowers. With a little know-how, floral displays can be one of the easiest ways to reinvigorate your living spaces!
